Welcome to Our Stones – Our Stories.
This site shows how the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries Project got together with a local school, and later the local community, to uncover some of the hidden heritage and history of the people that made Birmingham.
Some of the stories are tragic, some sad, many inspiring and we were happy to uncover the heritage of the people memorialised in the cemetary and helping uncover their hidden histories so we can be proud of them (in many cases) and what they achieved.
The project also uncovered some uncomfortable truths about the past and putting them in the context of the society at the time, try and understand why they were memorialised in what was often a grand style.

Our thanks to Josie Wall and her volunteers for the work they regularly put in, the young students that worked on the project and presented to us a few of the incredible stories of those memorialised and the local school for getting so enthusiastically involved and, of course, the youngsters that helped us understand how they felt about the memorialisation of their heritage and history they would only have heard of.
